Lettuce

The loose-leaf and butter-head lettuces are popular for Japanese salads and Taiwanese cooking. Leaves are very tender and delicious. Plants grow very well in temperate areas from spring to fall.

NOTE: Lettuce seeds require light to trigger and start the germination process under moist environments. It is recommended to sow seeds on the soil surface only, without covering with soil. In the Orient, farmers generally cover the sowed seeds and watered soil with a thin layer of the dried grass straw or a transparent plastic sheet. This allows the sun light to reach seeds and also keep moist conditions around seeds to trigger/start the germination process. Later the straw is removed after the seedlings are good and strong for transplanting into an open field for further growing.
